JPG to PNG Converter
Your files never leave your device
Conversion runs inside your browser using WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded; the only downloads are this page and the conversion engine. You can confirm it in your browser's network tab.
Why convert JPG to PNG?
Some tools and sites require PNG, and editing a PNG avoids adding new JPEG compression each time you save.
What changes in the PNG
- The file usually gets 2–5× larger.
- Quality doesn’t improve: compression artefacts already in the JPG are stored exactly.
- No transparency is added; the background stays as it was.
How Convertz converts it
Your browser decodes the JPG and saves the pixels as a lossless PNG. Camera metadata (including GPS location) is not copied to the new file.
Everything happens on your device; the file is never uploaded.
Common pitfalls
- To remove a background you need an editing tool; converting to PNG only makes transparency possible, it doesn’t create it.
- If the goal is a smaller file for the web, convert to WebP instead.

What is JPG?
The standard format for photographs since 1992. It discards detail the eye is least sensitive to, so files are small, but each re-save loses a little more quality, and hard edges such as text pick up visible artefacts.
What is PNG?
A lossless format created in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF. Pixels are stored exactly, with full alpha transparency, which makes it the right choice for screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with text. Photos saved as PNG are large.
