Frequently Asked Questions
Where do the prices come from?
Prices are CoinGecko's volume-weighted average across exchanges for the top 100 coins by market cap, with Bitcoin and Ethereum also checked against Gold-API.com. They are fetched every few minutes and cached for up to 15 minutes, so they can lag a fast-moving market.
Why does my exchange show a different price?
Each exchange has its own order book, so prices differ slightly between venues, and more for small coins with thin trading. Your exchange also adds trading fees and a spread between the buy and sell price. The converter shows the market average, not a price you can trade at.
How are fiat values other than USD calculated?
Coin prices are taken in US dollars and converted with the same exchange rates as the currency converter. For EUR, GBP and other currencies this can differ by a fraction of a percent from a price quoted directly in that currency.
Is a stablecoin always worth exactly $1?
No. Stablecoins such as USDT and USDC aim to hold $1 but trade freely, so their market price can move slightly above or below it, and has fallen well below it during past crises.
