JPG to WebP Converter
Your files never leave your device
Conversion runs inside your browser using WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded; the only downloads are this page and the conversion engine. You can confirm it in your browser's network tab.
Why convert JPG to WebP?
To speed up a website: WebP photos are usually 25–35% smaller than JPGs that look the same.
What changes in the WebP
- Files typically shrink by a quarter to a third.
- The photo is re-compressed once more; at quality 92 the difference isn’t visible in normal viewing.
- Camera metadata (including GPS location) is not copied.
How Convertz converts it
Your browser encodes a lossy WebP at quality 92 with its built-in encoder, falling back to ImageMagick in WebAssembly where the browser can’t encode WebP.
Everything happens on your device; the file is never uploaded.
Common pitfalls
- Converting from the original camera file or a high-quality JPG gives better results than converting an already heavily compressed one.
- Keep the JPG for printing and for sending to people who might not be able to open WebP.

What is JPG?
The standard format for photographs since 1992. It discards detail the eye is least sensitive to, so files are small, but each re-save loses a little more quality, and hard edges such as text pick up visible artefacts.
What is WebP?
A web image format with both lossy and lossless modes, transparency and animation. Google’s own tests found lossy WebP 25–34% smaller than JPEG at the same measured quality and lossless WebP about 26% smaller than PNG. Many sites now serve images as WebP, so “Save image as” often gives you a .webp file.
