Frequently Asked Questions
Where do the exchange rates come from?
Rates come from Open Exchange Rates and are refreshed hourly. If that service is unavailable, the converter falls back to the European Central Bank reference rates (published once each working day, around 16:00 CET) via the Frankfurter API.
Why is my bank or card rate different?
The converter shows the mid-market rate: the midpoint between what banks pay and charge each other. Banks, card issuers and exchange bureaus add a margin on top, typically 0.5–3% for cards and more at airport kiosks, and some also charge a flat fee.
Should I pay in my own currency when abroad?
Usually not. When a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency (dynamic currency conversion), the merchant's provider sets the rate, and it is often several percent worse than your card network's rate. Choosing the local currency is normally cheaper.
How many currencies can I convert?
More than 150, including all major and most regional currencies. Rates for currencies with capital controls or multiple official rates (for example the Argentine peso) may differ from the rate you can actually get.
