Which metal prices are live?
Gold, silver, platinum and palladium use spot prices from Gold-API.com; copper and aluminum use CME futures prices. These are cached for up to about an hour. The other 13 metals use a fixed indicative benchmark and are marked as such in the calculator.
What is a troy ounce?
The unit precious metals are priced in: exactly 31.1034768 grams, about 9.7% heavier than the 28.35 g avoirdupois ounce used for food. The calculator's "oz" option is the troy ounce.
Does the calculator account for purity?
No. It values pure metal. For jewellery or coins, multiply the weight by the fineness first, for example 0.750 for 18k gold or 0.925 for sterling silver. The gold and silver pages have purity tables.
Why is the price per tonne for copper but per ounce for gold?
Each market quotes in its own unit: precious metals per troy ounce, base metals per metric tonne on the London Metal Exchange (or per pound on COMEX). Pick any weight unit in the calculator and it converts.
