How these units are defined
The second is the SI base unit, defined by a caesium-133 transition frequency. Minutes, hours, days and weeks are exact multiples. Month and year here are Gregorian averages: a year of 365.2425 days and a month of one twelfth of that (30.436875 days).
| Unit | Equals |
|---|---|
| 1 Minute | 60 Second |
| 1 Hour | 3,600 Second |
| 1 Day | 86,400 Second |
| 1 Week | 604,800 Second |
| 1 Month (Avg) | 2,629,746 Second |
| 1 Year (Avg) | 31,556,952 Second |
Worked examples
- 1 Second = 0.016666667 Minute
- 10 Second = 0.16666667 Minute
- 100 Second = 1.6666667 Minute
Common mistakes
- Calendar months run from 28 to 31 days, so "3 months" from a given date is not 3 × 30.44 days. Use a date calculator for deadlines.
- A 365-day year, a 365.25-day Julian year and the 365.2425-day Gregorian year differ; interest and astronomy calculations specify which one they use.

Frequently asked questions
How many seconds are in a year?
There are 31,536,000 seconds in a common year (365 days) and 31,622,400 seconds in a leap year (366 days).
How do I convert between time zones?
Time zones are offset from UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). Add or subtract the UTC offset to convert. For example, EST is UTC-5, so noon UTC = 7 AM EST.
What is a Unix timestamp?
A Unix timestamp counts the number of seconds since January 1, 1970 (the Unix epoch). It is widely used in computing for date/time storage.
