How these units are defined
Each type converts between SI prefixes of a single unit: milli (10⁻³), micro (10⁻⁶), nano (10⁻⁹), pico (10⁻¹²), kilo (10³) and mega (10⁶).
Current
| Unit | Equals |
|---|---|
| 1 Milliampere | 0.001 Ampere |
| 1 Microampere | 0.000001 Ampere |
| 1 Kiloampere | 1,000 Ampere |
Voltage
| Unit | Equals |
|---|---|
| 1 Millivolt | 0.001 Volt |
| 1 Kilovolt | 1,000 Volt |
Resistance
| Unit | Equals |
|---|---|
| 1 Kiloohm | 1,000 Ohm |
| 1 Megaohm | 1,000,000 Ohm |
Capacitance
| Unit | Equals |
|---|---|
| 1 Millifarad | 0.001 Farad |
| 1 Microfarad | 0.000001 Farad |
| 1 Nanofarad | 1e-9 Farad |
| 1 Picofarad | 1e-12 Farad |
Worked examples
- 1 Ampere = 1,000 Milliampere
- 10 Ampere = 10,000 Milliampere
- 100 Ampere = 100,000 Milliampere
Common mistakes
- Amps, volts and ohms are different quantities. Getting volts from amps needs Ohm's law (V = I × R), not a unit conversion.
- Older capacitors marked "MFD" or "mfd" mean microfarads, not millifarads.
