How these units are defined
Fuel economy is converted through the US gallon (3.785411784 L) and imperial gallon (4.54609 L): L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ mpg (US). Power uses mechanical horsepower and metric horsepower (PS = 735.49875 W). Torque uses 1 lb·ft = 1.3558179 N·m.

Worked examples
- 1 MPG (US) = 1.2009499 MPG (UK)
- 10 MPG (US) = 12.009499 MPG (UK)
- 100 MPG (US) = 120.09499 MPG (UK)
Common mistakes
- L/100 km is inverse to mpg — lower is better — so it does not scale linearly: going from 10 to 20 mpg saves far more fuel than going from 40 to 50.
- UK and US mpg differ because the imperial gallon is 20% larger: 40 mpg (UK) is 33.3 mpg (US).
- Car makers in Europe and Japan usually quote PS, not horsepower; 100 PS is 98.6 hp.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert MPG to L/100km?
To convert miles per gallon to liters per 100 km, divide 235.215 by the MPG value. For example, 30 MPG = 7.84 L/100km.
What is good fuel economy?
Good fuel economy varies by vehicle type. For cars, 30-40 MPG (5.9-7.8 L/100km) is considered good. Hybrids can achieve 50+ MPG (4.7 L/100km or less).
How do I convert horsepower to kilowatts?
To convert horsepower to kilowatts, multiply by 0.7457. For example, 200 HP = 149.14 kW.
