How these units are defined
Luminance is how bright a surface looks: 1 nit = 1 cd/m², and a foot-lambert is 1/π cd/ft² (3.4262591 cd/m²). Illuminance is light falling on a surface: 1 lux = 1 lumen/m², and a foot-candle is 1 lumen/ft² (10.7639104 lux).

| 1 Candela/m² | 1 Nit |
| 1 Foot-lambert | 3.4262591 Nit |

Worked examples
- 1 Nit = 1 Candela/m²
- 10 Nit = 10 Candela/m²
- 100 Nit = 100 Candela/m²
Common mistakes
- Luminance (screens, nits) and illuminance (lux meters, room lighting) are different quantities and do not convert into each other.
- Lumens measure a lamp's total output; turning lumens into lux needs the illuminated area.
