Kilobyte to Byte (Kilobyte to Byte)
Result
1,024 Byte
Formula
Byte = Kilobyte × 1,024
1 Kilobyte = 1,024 Byte, and 1 Byte = 0.0009765625 Kilobyte.
Storage here uses binary multiples (1 KB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MB = 1,024² bytes), the convention most operating systems use. The IEC names for these are kibibyte (KiB), mebibyte (MiB) and so on. Bandwidth uses decimal SI prefixes (1 Mbit/s = 1,000,000 bit/s).
Worked examples
- 1 Kilobyte × 1,024 = 1,024 Byte
- 10 Kilobyte × 1,024 = 10,240 Byte
- 100 Kilobyte × 1,024 = 102,400 Byte
Common mistakes
- Drive manufacturers use decimal units: a "1 TB" drive holds 10¹² bytes, which an operating system shows as about 931 GB (binary).
- Bits are not bytes: a 100 Mbit/s connection downloads at most 12.5 MB per second (divide by 8), before protocol overhead.
