FLAC to MP3 Converter

Why convert FLAC to MP3?
Many car stereos, older players and iTunes/Apple Music on Mac can’t play FLAC, and MP3 takes far less space on a phone.
What changes in the MP3
- Files shrink to roughly a quarter to a fifth of the FLAC size.
- Lossless audio becomes lossy; at VBR quality 2 most people can’t hear the difference.
- Hi-res files (for example 24-bit, 96 kHz) come out at 48 kHz, the maximum MP3 supports.
- Title, artist and album tags are copied; embedded cover art is not.
How Convertz converts it
FFmpeg (WebAssembly) encodes MP3 with LAME at VBR quality 2, typically 170–210 kbps, which most listeners can’t tell from the source. Title, artist and album tags are copied as ID3v2.3.
Everything happens on your device; the file is never uploaded.
Common pitfalls
- Keep the FLAC files as your archive: converting MP3 back to FLAC won’t restore the lost detail.
- If you use Apple devices, ALAC (Apple Lossless) keeps full quality and plays natively, if space allows.

What is FLAC?
An open lossless format from Xiph.Org (2001). It compresses audio to roughly 50–70% of the WAV size without losing anything, and is used for CD rips and hi-res downloads (24-bit, 96 kHz and above).
What is MP3?
The universal compressed audio format, standardised in 1993. It removes sounds that are masked by louder ones; at 190 kbps or more most listeners can’t tell it from the original. Its patents expired in 2017.
